Tips to Protect Your Identity Online

|If a criminal had your personal information, he could take money out of your bank account, set up credit cards in your name, and even make you look responsible for committing crimes. These and other reasons make it important for you to protect your identity online. Follow these tips to keep yourself safer.

Tip #1: Use Different Passwords for Your Accounts

Sure, it’s easier to remember one password for all of your accounts. Doing that, however, can get you in a lot of trouble. Consider what would happen if a hacker got the password to your email account. If you have the same password for your bank and credit card accounts, he would have no problems accessing those as well.

Tip #2: Make Your Passwords Random

Hackers often use software that helps them discover passwords. If you use a whole word as your password, then eventually the software will figure it out. It’s important to insert numbers and special characters in your password to trick the software. The more random you can make your password, the harder it is to figure out.

Tip #3: Think Before You Click

It’s rather easy for hackers to create invisible links over images and words. In other words, you’re not necessarily clicking on what you think you’re clicking on. In some cases, these clickjacked links can take you to pages that install malware on your computer. The malware can even spread itself through Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms by asking your friends to click the link, too.

Tip #4: Use Some Discretion

You should know that some pages are more likely to steal your information and give you viruses than others. Don’t visit websites that promote illegal activities like buying illicit drugs and unregistered guns. Also, sites with pornographic videos will almost always do something bad to your computer. They lure you in, and then they infect your computer with viruses that watch your every keystroke to learn your passwords and account numbers. You can never be too careful when protecting your identity online. As a general rule, if you feel like you’re acting paranoid, you’re probably doing a decent job.
